CRYSTAL RIVER/ HOMOSASSA SPRINGS VACA PICS!!

by Robin

Ok, these made the top 50 pics that I had time to upload and down-size for the blog.  I regret that I have no video because my underwater camera broke on the 3rd day, before we went scalloping.  The video from the springs has disappeared.  I am just ever thankful that the I did not lose everything.

Dropped Jack off at Pete's Pier and he motored over to the Days Inn for First Choice (our boat's name) to stay in slip #1 for the week.

 photo 2014-08-10035111FirstChoice.jpg

First day.  Boys with too much energy wrestling in the pool.

Day 2:  Went out of Crystal River only to be met with 2 rain cells merging into one big t-cell.  180 turn-around.  Head to Three Sister Springs for manatee viewing and ice cold swimming.

When we arrived, we saw many tour boats there with people in the water all looking down.  I jumped in and captured this picture of the 2 green blobs lurking, I mean sleeping, on the bottom.  Kinda creepy to swim through water this dark.  I am SO GLAD these images didn't turn out to be gator shaped!  Tour guide complained at my youngest because he was wearing flippers.  Me too, but I kept mine down until he left.  Ooops.

 photo 10509646_10152627029872485_6025756863532704948_n.jpg

Ok, so I head into the springs.  These are slightly out of order but starting with the prettiest one first. :)  This is the deepest of the 3 big springs back there.

 photo 10614271_10152627025232485_1167663488914691328_n.jpg

This is a grouping of tree roots just to the left before the area opens up to the springs.

I feel like I'm going in backwards order, but the rocks are right after the underwater gate.  Some pretty little fish live in the rocks.

My eldest going under the deepest branch.  I wanna say this goes down about 20-25 ft.  I don't know how his lungs and ears aren't killing him.

 photo 2014-08-11002125SuperDown.jpg

Wait, maybe they were!!  I really do feed this boy.  (He is my garbage disposal.)

 photo 2014-08-11002108Ascend.jpg

My youngest needed to work up his nerve a little bit more.  Afterall, it is 71-73 deg water.  See him shivering??

 photo 2014-08-11002015ColdThoughts.jpg

Another dive.

 photo 2014-08-11001910FirstDive.jpg

Thumbs up!

 photo 2014-08-11002104thumbsUp.jpg

My turn!!   He actually went completely under that branch.

 photo 2014-08-11002033MikeDive.jpg

So brave!  Multiple dives down about 15+ ft.

 photo 2014-08-11002038Uphill.jpg

Ok, well that didn't last for long.  We heard the thunder catching up to us and had to head back in through a downpour.

 photo 2014-08-11004929Downpour.jpg

And it rained ALL NIGHT.  I bet the dogs are very glad they didn't come with us.

 photo 2014-08-11011947Flood.jpg

Here we are waiting it out.  The hotel owner told us we could cancel our trip and head home without any cancelling fees.  We are debating that.  Why is the vote always 2 against 2?  Good thing I won out this time!  LOL.  We stayed and tried to wait for weather to clear.

 photo 2014-08-11224350WaitingRoom.jpg

Bored, swimming in rain. As long as there was no lightening, we were fine.

 photo 10606378_10152629286562485_3097979033852818_n.jpg

This may have been somewhere around Tue evening.  Weather moved through but it was too late to head out scalloping.  Hubby and I went to the end of Fort Island Trail and went out on the fishing dock.

 photo 2014-08-12070741Boardwalk.jpg

Our view to the left.  Nice little marshy area and the man-made beach is beyond that.  photo 2014-08-12071005MarshGrass.jpg

We did look up the sunset times but I forgot to add an hour of daylight savings time.  Oops.

 photo 2014-08-12072526JackPier2.jpg

We were killing time so we took some pictures of us with the camera timer and it sitting on a tri-pod.  Not bad!

 photo 2014-08-12073426JackRobin2.jpg

A young lady almost lost her pole over the side of the rail.  I saved it.  She pulled this guy up but was too scared to touch it.  Jack stepped in and held onto it so the boyfriend could dehook it.

 photo 2014-08-12071530Hammerhead.jpg

Back to some nice pictures of Jack.

 photo 2014-08-12072454JackPier.jpg

Well, I didn't downsize the sun setting but here is one from right after it set.

 photo 10593053_10152631643397485_2696026794151483853_n.jpg

We totally enjoyed our evening together.

 photo 2014-08-12073529JackRobin.jpg

The colors were magnificent.

 photo 1920453_10152631643437485_4420158304198592879_n.jpg

After sunset, we had an appetizer at Cracker's restaurant.  Conch, Gator bites, and Clams.... while watching Shark Week.

Wednesday, we finally were blessed with a dry day.  Time to throw on the suits and snorkel gear and hunt up some scallops.

 photo 10547462_10152631643667485_86010320685297147_n.jpg

We traveled through some beautiful area.  I turned the camera to get a vertical shot, but I think I prefer it this way.  Looks like a Llama to me.  Any else see that??

 photo 2014-08-12210538LlamaTrees.jpg

These two have been sitting up here for several years.  Life jackets change but the fun conversations never stop.  It does my heart good to see them getting along.

 photo 2014-08-12212155Convo.jpg

Oops, a throwback to the canal again.  With sunglasses this time.

 photo 2014-08-12205842BoatRide.jpg

At one point, I was in the cuddy, organizing all the gear and sending it up to the guys.  I think I must have said something funny to get them to smile.  Hmmm.  It worked.

 photo 2014-08-11003020FunnyGuys.jpg

These two get along so well.  Hard to believe our son is 18 now.

 photo 2014-08-11003042FatherSon.jpg

If you've known Jack for any length of time, you will know that he makes a lot of funny faces, especially for the camera.

 photo 2014-08-11003058CaptJack.jpg

I do have more scalloping pictures but forgot to down-size them today.  Here was our entire catch for the day (& trip).  Very pitiful this year.  Current was ripping because of the full moon.  There were times I was kicking and kicking and wasn't sure I could make it back up to the boat.  I was concerned a little bit for our youngest.  He was smart to stay by the boat and extended rope we leave drifting behind it.

 photo 2014-08-13020406scallops.jpg

We came in before dark so we could explore Shell Island.  We thought it would be like a mini-paradise.  We were SO WRONG!!  It was filled with biting flies.  Couldn't enjoy 2 minutes out there without getting bitten, stung!!   Jack swam my camera out to me so I could take these photos.

 photo 2014-08-13031409FirstChoice.jpg

The boys are already back in the boat in the picture below.  They just laid down.  ha ha.

 photo 2014-08-13031137FBCover.jpg

I think this actually goes on Tuesday night pictures... playing with the underwater camera.... while it rained.  Then, the camera bit the dust while looking at the pics online.  Waaaaah.  No camera for scalloping.

 photo 10544336_10152629286567485_8381200415631908889_n.jpg

Thursday, we loaded the boat back up and then left it at the hotel while we went down the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Refuge.  So many great pics, but here are just a few.

Horned Owl.

 photo 2014-08-14013425HornedOwl.jpg

They have Louie the hippo (honorary Floridian).  He didn't want to participate much for the crowd.  I have one or two pics that maybe I can try to show later.

We saw gorgeous birds, foxes, bears, deer, gators, manatee and fish!  We saw they were building a Florida panther exhibit too.  Should be coming soon.

These are Barred Owls.

 photo 10517580_10152634001072485_2117653836023456220_n.jpg

The whole center is built around a protected spring.  Boat and people are not allowed back in there. But, they have this fantastic underwater observatory.  (There is a manatee in this picture!)

 photo 10613000_10152634001357485_846260904436257944_n.jpg

My Captain, O Captain!!  (in honor of Robin Williams, who passed while we were on vacation)  Love him.

 photo 2014-08-14023436JackManatee.jpg

And I am his Mommatee!!  LOL.  Hey, if you're going to be a manatee... you need to do it in style.

 photo 2014-08-14023505RobinManatee.jpg

I could not stop singing, "Barbara Manatee".   We showed up in time to see their feeding time.  Kids called this cabbage but I think it is more like a bok choy.  Right?

 photo 2014-08-14020810LettuceBath.jpg

Ok, this picture (the really big, quality pixel one) is going in a frame or a calendar somewhere.  Love it!!  Those are healthy Sheepshead feeding with the manatee.

Hungry??

 photo 10384805_10152634001182485_3806320025731687274_n.jpg

We could have stayed here for hours.  They even use their flippers to hold the food in place.  LOL.

 photo 10514702_10152634001062485_8151570575576887324_n.jpg

Well, that's a good portion of the pictures.  Hope you enjoyed them.
Happy Vacationing and Beginning of School,

Prepping Pooped!

by Robin

I am pretty certain that I am exhausted from running errands, prepping, packing, planning, and soon-to-loading.  I do not want to run one more load of laundry and yet.... my youngest is because .... his Nike socks weren't washed.  I need a nap!!

Our precious bunny is at the bunny sitters.  Our hens are happy & loaded with food & water.  They'll get a daily check.  Our dogs are not making the trip this year and we have a dog sitter.  So thankful for good neighbors.  Pool is overchlorinated and cleaned.  Garden is on rest.

I am READY to go!! I was so ready yesterday that I swam in my pool with my snorkeling gear on.  LOL.

Jack did all truck, boat and trailering maintenance earlier today.  Time to gas up and then hitch her up.  We're just waiting on one thing...... a son to get off work late tonight.  He can sleep on the drive over.

Did I mention that I'm ready?  I'm ready.

Happy scalloping!!

GREAT WHITE Sharks - NOT CHECK!!!  Lol!

Ok, loading up the boat and going to head over!!  Looking for manatee and scallops.

See ya from the "West" coast!!
God bless,

Searching for the best scalloping bottom.

by Robin....

Are you ready??  These are the underwater gates to Three Sister Springs.  This is from 2012 because when we went in 2013... it was a mad house!  People everywhere.  Silt was stirred up like crazy. We had to worry about getting run over.  I'm soooo glad we're doing a week trip and avoiding the weekend crowds this time.

 photo DSCN0135UnderwaterGates.jpg

Ok, so really, for scalloping, you want to get out of King's Bay, down Crystal River and out the mouth of the port.  Find the crowd.  Don't run aground.  You want to be in about 3-4 ft of water. 6 ft is too deep if you want any endurance. Be careful not to hit people or shallow rock formations.

 photo DSCN0343Steps.jpg

Different bottoms. Not good. We have found the scallops don't like this stuff as much.

 photo DSCN0474Coral.jpg

Not great. Those little fluffy balls will make you anchor up only to be disappointed. Not impossible to find them, I'm just saying grass is better.

 photo DSCN0350MixBottom.jpg

Best. There is thick grass, but you'll be hunting and hunting.  We found that sparse grass is the best.

 photo DSCN0507Scallop.jpg

When you find that, you'll find the scallops.

Just a couple more days........

SCALLOP SEASON - where to begin?

by Robin

Hello fellow followers (including the NSA and the NMFS guys),

I'm sorry I lost interest in blogging.  We have been fishing and completely enjoyed ourselves with Snapper season two of the three times. We broken an engine sensor on the first Friday's trip.   I felt bad for our friend Martin who was finally gonna get to go offshore and catch a big fish.

Waited for Sea Tow to get us because we didn't know if the engine was really overheating.  Didn't want to risk it.

Sunday's trip was better, but I got sea sick.  vomited right after we landed this fish.  Still, nice color in the box between the mahi and red snapper.

The next Saturday, we were back on our boat and Jack put me on snapper after snapper.  We stayed relatively shallow, so we threw back many of them before I found my keeper.

Not a hero but a decent fight and keeper.

But, anyhow, I came back here to review my own pictures and inventory of scallop season.  What a blessing it was that I made a list last year.  Now, I just need to check it off again.

I've got one week to go!!

Anyhow, here are just a few of the things I did to check off some things on the list to get out the door.

* shop in bulk for snacks and drinks
* dremmel dog toenails and give them flea meds
* hair cuts for all, pedicure for me, color hair (because there is nothing worse than seeing gray roots in all my pictures!
* laundry, dishes, yard cutting, ironing, more laundry
* packing suit cases (Technically, the boys did their own.)
* make sure pool chemicals are right & pool treated before we go
* have various critter sitters lined up, folks to watch house, take in mail, etc.
* clear off all cameras, charge all rechargeables, find cords to charge things
* make more lists
* gather together salt, pepper, dish towels, soaps, meds, shampoos, griddle, blender, etc.
* get papers ready for Open House at co-op on Tuesday.
* more laundry, pack bathing suits, sunblock, bug spray, first aid
* sort snorkel gear and make sure everyone has their individual grab bags marked & ready to load on boat

* garbage out!

And like every year, at this time, we have birthdays!!  3 in a month's time.  Here, our eldest turns 18!!

Lobster mini-season came and went but Jack could not get off work to drive his friend's boat and follow bubbles.  What a shame.  I love lobster with Thanksgiving dinner.

God bless you all.  Like always, I'll be bringing my bloggie for video, Nikon L810 for good pictures and my underwater Nikon for scalloping and springs pics.   Maybe I'll even blog more this week.

Blessings and Tight lines to you all,
Robin

FIRST CHOICE

by Robin

 photo P4050099FIRSTCHOICE.jpg

Our buddy boat stayed behind to make another drift or two over the area.  We opted to begin heading back in.  Our boat only has one engine on it and so we tend to travel between 27-30 knots.  We probably got the first 24 miles down before we noticed we were being trailed.

Well, not so much trailed but being pursued.  LOL.  Sure enough, we were passed and they took some nice pictures of us.

Love them.

 photo P4050098FIRSTCHOICE.jpg

Not long after this picture, they were stopped by FWC and checked for illegal fish.  The big orange boat after us (in the channel) was also checked.  I guess we look like honest folks.  ha ha.

It sure was a gorgeous ride in after such a strange start in the fog.

 photo 2014-04-05064632Sunset2.jpg

This was after we made it through the channels and had a manatee zone. I was setting up for the photo when the shrimp boat passed us. Why, thank you very much!!

I love seeing all the fish pictures of people out there catching right now.  So many kings and wahoo.  A few cobia, too.   (Btw, cobia meat was $17.99/ lb at the market the other day.  Wow.)

Happy Fishing everyone.

REEF FISH

by Robin

The Gulf of Mexico has some very beautiful reef fish.  And they seem to be much bigger than the ones I'm used to in the Atlantic.

Here's the two main reef fish we caught and kept from our trip last weekend.

We were trying to ID this porgy.  The best we could come up with was a Knobbed Head Porgy.  Supposed to be excellent pan fish.  We kept 3 of the bigger ones we caught. Wow, they were brilliant blue coming fresh out of the water.

 photo 2014-04-05021649Porgy.jpg

These were called a Key West grunt (AKA white grunt, although, not very white).  I'm thinking we had a couple of these nearly 3/4 lb but Jack says most were 1/2 lb.  We kept all of these when we could get 'em.  They make excellent white meat.  Our boys LOVE fried fish, so these will do the trick.

 photo 2014-04-05004056KWGrunt.jpg

Ok, I'll give you a couple more pictures. First drop for me, I get bowed over and it is a good fight. I finally win the battle and Jack calls out, "Amberjack!" He nets it for me and I take the picture. (Of course! Standard protocol.)

   photo 2014-04-04234933LesserAmberjk.jpg

They have to be no greater than 22" in the Gulf and mine was 24", so after we took a picture of me holding it, back it went.

This is my first time fighting an Amberjack.  The Greater Amberjacks are called Donkies, with good reason.  They are very stubborn and hard to pull up.  I'm thankful to have been broken in with a Lesser one first.  Not that I would have loved a big ol' fight but I did need my arms for all the Red Grouper we were going to catch after this.

Happy Fishing,

COMING OUT OF THE FOG!!

by Robin

Wow, have I totally neglected my blog.  We're coming out of winter and into the best fishing of the year.  Spring!!

I will start posting up pictures this week of the past couple fishing trips.

 photo 2014-04-05014122CarneyFogSm.jpg

For a teaser, here is one from yesterday.  We were fishing in the Gulf of Mexico with friend. We had the most incredible fog! Seems like it lasted all day.  It had varying degrees but mostly it was just THERE. So glad we had a buddy boat!  I'm actually quite comfortable with not seeing shore when we go fishing.  I fully admit being a bit creeped out by fog roughly 46 miles offshore. The crazy things we do to catch fish.  LOL.

God bless & be looking for updates all week.

HINGES!

by Robin

Our floor boxes are getting repainted and new hinges.  Jack didn't like the original color, so he repainted all the fronts last night.  I don't have a picture of that but let's just call it eggshell or cream.

 photo 2014-02-16061238Hinges.jpg

But we went from some basic pulls for anything in a house to something made for boats & nautical life.

Here is the backside of the new cut-outs and he sealed them up.  He also put some non-skid on them because the last time we did this, we were figure skating across them when the floor was slimey & wet from fish.

Not exciting update, but it is progress.  I think we paint the floor next and finish some last bits of teak refinishing and we're done.  I want to be fishing in March.   I saw a friend of ours go out yesterday for cobia and they were not in yet.

COSMETIC WORK

by Robin

Above, Jack sanded and painted the insides of the storage boxes. Then, he refinished the teak wood and installed new pole holders in that area.  This allows for holding 4, not 3 poles.  Plus, he made the cut-out at the end of the box bigger to accommodate the rod tips much easier. We were always fighting those little 2 holes it came with from the manufacturer.

Jack is installing the other set.

As you can see here, the chairs and live well still are out of the boat and are in various processes of being fixed.  But, the teak on the side pocket storage boxes has also been reinstalled.

Jack says next weekend's steps will be to remove the floor box lids & latches.  Those will get repainted and so will the floor from where we scratched it up over the past 6-7 yrs.

We'll be fishing hopefully in March.
Blessings,
Robin

FEBRUARY UPDATE

by Robin

Almost nothing is new here.  Jack continues to work a little each weekend with finishing up the teak restoration.  He's putting some new latches in the floor boxes soon.  They came in the big brown truck a couple days ago.  He tells me that we've even going to repaint the floor of our boat!  Wow.  She is going to look super-sharp again.

This week, Jack also received his order in for a new tackle bag.

So happy to be fixing up the boat and can't wait to get fishing soon!! I hear that the cobia are beginning to show up in small numbers.

Blessings!
